Happy Birthday

happy.gif

Stop. 男人不可以哭得太难看。

wefeelfine + Google Map

Here’s a little mashup I created using wefeelfine.org’s data and Google Map. It’s interesting to see some of the result of the geodata visualization. For instance:

Most recent feelings.
Most recent ‘angry’ feelings.
Feelings on April 17th, 2007 (the day after Virginia Tech shooting).
Most recent ’suicidal’ feelings. (it can also be used to solve potential social problem :P)

A brief description from wefeelfine.org:

Since August 2005, We Feel Fine has been harvesting human feelings from a large number of weblogs. Every few minutes, the system searches the world’s newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases “I feel” and “I am feeling”. When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the “feeling” expressed in that sentence (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.)…The result is a database of several million human feelings, increasing by 15,000 - 20,000 new feelings per day…

*I haven’t test this thing extensively. Things might break.
Update: for those interested, the source is here.

Updates on ‘feeling’ tracking project

Gee, I really need to figure out a good name for this project, eh.

Anyway, I modified some of the codes to take advantage of the recently updated API on wefeelfine.org. (Thanks Sep). The whole thing should run smoother and faster now. I will be optimizing some of the codebase over time to get this baby lean and mean.

Also today, I found another practical usage for the project - love hunting. Here’s my brief and interesting chat transcript with pinkpau.

the pinkpau’s MSN nickname -> just a bit of sensitivity…
Alvin says: girl always says tthat!
Alvin says: what they really want is a lot alot more sensitivity
the pinkpau says: coz its true!
Alvin says: then come out and say you expect ‘a lot more sensitivity’ from us, not ‘a bit of’.
Alvin says: for us, there’s a huge difference

the pinkpau says: but even if we told u guys we expect a lot of /a bit of sensitivity, we’re not gonna get it anyway >_<
Alvin says: that’s true. so whats the point
the pinkpau says: -____________-
the pinkpau says: see u guys are such meanies
Alvin says: i am just being honest.
the pinkpau says: and there is no room for niceness?
Alvin says: well there is, if we want sex
Alvin says: sory, i just crash unrealistic realism onto your front door.
the pinkpau says: that is SO like a man!
Alvin says: i am pretty sure there’re some lovely frogs living the fairy dream out there waiting for girls like you.
the pinkpau says: all the frogs are in porridge
Alvin says: save them then.
Alvin says: some men are worth saving.
the pinkpau says: barely come across them these days
Alvin says: because they are buried under the porridge!
the pinkpau says: ok
Alvin says: here
Alvin says: link
Alvin says: all the sensitive man
Alvin says: in the world
the pinkpau says: im one of those ppl who likes to poke around the bottom of the bowl with a spoon to get all the yummy stuff
Alvin says: currently
Alvin says: poke aroundis no good. sometimes you might end up getting cockroaches on your spoon.
the pinkpau says: hahahaha thats so cool
the pinkpau says: not the cockroaches but ur map

Everyone loves tall, blonde, hot women tennis players from former Soviet Union. But I think I like this Serbia’s sweetheart. My dad is a huge Justine Henin fan but I’m rooting for Ana.

She will win :).

Update: She lost….very badly. I think it’s something like 6-1, 6-1. :(

Paris In, Paris Out…and In

When you see me commenting on a Hollywood circus news, you know I have too much time to kill.

Ok. Paris Hilton doesn’t matter to me. She doesn’t look that hot to me either. And I certainly couldn’t care less how dumb she makes herself looks like on some days. She’s what America is all about - money, sex, scandal, hot, party, and booze and I’m totally fine with that.

But no one should be publicly humiliated like that. I mean yeah it’s totally stupid (mental breakdown? gimme a break) and injustice to put her in house arrest after only 3 days (it is not 5!) in jail. I mean this is as classic and sad a double standard system as you can get. Everyone’s screaming ‘you gotta be kiddin me!’.

A lot of people want to see her in jail for what she’d done, me included. But after what had happened, you just don’t right the wrong by throwing her back into jail. How is that going to fix anything? You are just expanding this whole circus.

You want to show the whole world no one is above the law? Try that by making sure this doesn’t happen again in the future and judging by the current rate Hollywood stars get pulled over by cops for suspected DUI nowadays, it’s not going to be too long for them to have the opportunity to amend the mistake.

Being a living symbol, naive and rich as she is, that makes it ok.

I guess.

w3c validator 0.8

w3c.gif

0.8 beta 2 has a new face lift. Cleaner UI. Better error reporting. Whee!

At UNL, we deploy a local instance of the same validator to avoid overwhelming W3C’s server in our effort to validate and promote accessibility and sanity check to almost all of our published web pages. Some of our team members have been working hard in making improvement to the validator to fulfill our own needs and contributing back to the working group in the process.

Congrats to both the W3C’s and UNL’s validator team.

Thing just got better in Manchester United

Manchester United’s right back, Gary Neville and midfielder, Michael Carrick got married recently. It’s definitely a good year to do that :).

interesting ‘feelings’

Since I launched the wefeelfine’s mashup, a couple of users had sent over some interesting (and funny) screen shots.

I created a flickr set to collect these pictures. Send them over if you stumble across anything interesting.

nano interface design?

Given the recent popularity of web widgets and mobile applications, you get to see some very interesting designs on small interface. I find it both an interesting and challenging task when designing for such screen. On one hand, you have many functionalities that you have to fit into this one tiny area. On the other hand, you have to worry about the usability aspect of it - text size, resizable interface, elements interaction within the interface and of course, trying to make sure the dang thing doesn’t look too busy and cluttered.

So given an interface dimension of about 290×180px, how would you design an interactive class schedule, a mini map and an emails/news listing widget? Here’re some screenshots from the project I’m currently working on:

& Serenading

When I was a boy I could hear
Symphonies in seashells
So why am I so deaf at twenty-two
To the sound of the driving snow
That drives me home to you

They deserve a post by itself because these are beautiful words. I first came across them on Ryan Sim’s Virb page. So a big thanks to him. They were written by a band called “Mineral” from the 1990’s. Full lyrics here.

Knocked up

Knocked up was by far one of the funniest and most enjoyable movie I’d seen. Paul Rudd was pure classic in there and I’m sure this picture (on current GQ issue) is classic in many indescribable ways too. :P
