Chan-wook Park’s revenge trilogy

I finally finished the last piece of Chan-wook Park’s revenge trilogy. It’s been a very disturbing, torturous yet memorable movie experience. The three movies are sick in a classy way, funny in a dark way and lovely in an ugly way.

Top 3 rawest, most disturbing scenes in the trilogy:

1.) In Old Boy, when Dae-su Oh grabs a live, moving squid (or octopus?) and eats it raw. I lost my appetite for seafood for a good one month after watching that scene.

2.) In Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, a little girl who was earlier kidnapped and later hanged against the ceiling, with her feet still on a chair, by the psychotic Mr. Baek. Then out of no where (a little heads up would have been nice, Mr Chan!), Mr. Baek kicks away the chair and that poor kid is left hanging and chokes and dies. The camera doesnt move an inch away from that kid throughout the entire scene. It still puzzles me to this day how they shot that scene without hurting the little actress? Yeah, I almost puked.

3.) The sex (if you can even call that sex) scene on the dining table in Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.

One of my friends said if you like SAW, you will like the trilogy. I disagree. They are both very different genre of movies. SAW is more towards being gory and disgusting with all the bloods and defacement, while this trilogy spikes your nerve and serves you this horrible emotional tortures that last for days about how far people would go and do to get their revenge. It is basically disgusting Vs disturbing.

In case you still have no idea what I was talking about, Chan-wook Park’s revenge trilogy consists of three movies: Sympathy for Mr Vengeance (2002), Oldboy (2003), Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005).
